When did stem cell research begin?
The term “stem cell” was proposed by Russian histologist Alexander Maksimov a little over a hundred years ago, in 1908. Around this time, Maksimov, among other European researchers, began to hypothesize that the cells that make up the human body are derived from a specific cell. This would be the “stem cell.” However, stem cell research did not take off until further into the century.
