Multipotent Stem Cells

What are multipotent stem cells?

Multipotent stem cells can differentiate into multiple lineages. In other words, multipotent stem cells are able to differentiate into a related family of cell types. These stem cells are classified as fetal and adult stem cells. They are more limited than pluripotent stem cells in how many types of cells they can turn into, but have demonstrated the capacity to differentiate into a variety of tissues such as bone, muscle, cartilage, and fat. An example of a multipotent stem cell is a hematopoietic stem cell, which is a blood-forming stem cell.
