Stem Cells

Introduction to stem cells
Stem cells are a distinctive type of cell that are able to reproduce themselves as well as transform into other cells that perform different functions. Similar to regular cells, stem cells undergo mitosis, which is when a cell duplicates its chromosomes and then separates them, resulting in two new cells.

Stem cells may also undergo a process called differentiation, through which a stem cell transforms into a specialized cell. This occurs in a series of modifications, including change in shape, membrane potential, metabolic activity, and signal responsiveness. The way stem cells change during differentiation depends on the tissue in which they will ultimately live.
